St. Louis is a midwestern city in Missouri located along the western bank of Mississippi River, just south of where the Missouri River joins the Mississippi River. Often called the Gateway to the West, the city, as the eastern terminus of the Oregon Trail, was a starting point for many people who moved into the western territories. Prior to the Louisiana Purchase under President Jefferson in 1803, St. Louis was the capital of what was then called Upper Louisiana.

One of the most recognizable structures in the world is located in St. Louis: the Gateway Arch which has come to symbolize the city itself. Part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Park, it is located on the site of the original city of St. Louis. Construction was completed in 1965.

St. Louis MapThe climate of St. Louis is considered to be humid continental. The city has four distinct seasons. The area is affected by cold Arctic air driven by the jet stream in the winter and by hot humid tropical air from the Gulf of Mexico in the summer.

Major sports teams of St. Louis include the St. Louis Cardinals (NL baseball), the St. Louis Rams (football), and the St. Louis Blues (hockey).
